Canonbie is situated north of Carlisle just over the Scottish border, close to Gretna Green (ideal for wedding parties looking for accommodation). There is a pub in the village (dog friendly in the bar area) with restaurant and a Post Office and small store. Caledonia Park at Gretna with its wide range of outlet shops and food offers is only 15 mins away.
Nearby Langholm is the gateway to some of the most spectacular scenery that Southern Scotland has to offer. Rich in history, Langholm was the centre of the Border Reiver insurrections but is now famed for its annual Common Riding.
Carlisle has a cathedral and castle to explore and a vibrant centre with many shops and restaurants. It hosts regular seasonal continental markets and events. Activities for all the family are ongoing throughout the year.
This is an ideal base to explore the Lake District which is under an hour away, Hadrian’s Wall, the Solway coast of Scotland which is a haven for wildlife and the Scottish Borders. Glasgow and Edinburgh are around 2 hours away by car or around an hour and a half by train from Carlisle. There is a regular bus service, the X95, to Carlisle that stops in the village. Kielder Forest with cycle paths and signposted walks is 25 miles away, and for keen cyclists nearby Newcastleton is host to one of the 7stanes which are seven mountain biking centres spanning the south of Scotland, from the heart of the Scottish Borders to Dumfries and Galloway. At each of the locations there is a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend.
Further east, in Northumberland, you will find magnificent landscapes, including Hadrian’s Wall, majestic castles, unspoiled sandy beaches and delightful traditional fishing ports.
